From Ashes to Diamonds

چکیده

This article examines the making and makers of “memorial diamonds.” These are “natural” diamonds identical to gemstones found in nature but produced laboratories with carbon sourced from genetic material (cremation ashes) or other objects symbolic emotional value. Threading corporality objectified life forms, we examine transformation ashes “afterlife” these “living” that at once synthetic organic. We ask, first, what affective properties distinguish those extracted nature? Second, how living memorialized representations inert substances – continuity bodily elements deceased valued mediated through “real” human, though artificially grown, natural objects? Drawing research leading companies memorial diamond business Switzerland United States, this suggests diamonds’ singular connection human body offer a window into transmutations between artificial, memory likeness, death.
